Myself and my parents are planning to travel to Melbourne and Brisbane over the coming month, however us having no drivers license means we might need to get slugged by the Skybus at Melbourne and AirTrain at Brisbane.

However I thought about an idea if we catch Uber to the nearest train station for less than $25 then change for a train to the city, it might well be cheaper than going direct. The question I have is, which is the closest non-airport train station to Melbourne and Brisbane Airports, where I can catch Uber from those stations to the Airport cheaply?

Thank you.

Melbourne - Broadmeadows - but just as easy to get the 901 bus from the shed.

Brisbane - Eagle Junction or Toombul but by then your half way to the city.

Skybus in Melbourne is currently $18 per person one way.

If you go by train you will need to factor in cost of a Myki card @ $6 each plus train fare plus uber fare!
Cheaper and far quicker to use skybus.
By the way i do not work for skybus

The 901 bus to Frankston (transferring to a train at Broadmeadows station) isn't glamorous or fast, but it is relatively easy and much cheaper than the Skybus (1/4 of the price). The hardest part is finding the bus stop at the airport. It is located near Terminal 4 and had been designed to be as hidden and indiscreet as possible.

You should also factor in age of your parents and the fact that public buses have little room for luggage. At all stations in central melbourne there will be lots of walking and stairs or escalators to deal with! Also need to consider how you get from station to your accommodation, particularly if you have luggage. Skybus includes hotel drop off in cbd. Note train alone will be over $10 per person as you will need $6 Myki cards.

Skybus is great, but once you have 3 people it would be nearly same price to uber or get a cab...plus nicer for elderly folks

You can UberX it to Broadmeadows and get the train in from there, but that'll cost $55.20 for the three of you: $25 for the UberX from Tullamarine Airport to Broadmeadows station; $18 for three Myki cards; and $12.30 for three adult fares from Zone 2 into Zone 1.

Depending on your final destination and how much local travel you plan on doing, you may well be better off using the UberX car to travel all the way to your destination. I suggest you run an estimate.

Remember that using myki allows unlimited train, tram and bus transfers in Melbourne with the fare being $4.10 for two hours (based on touch on times, so you can travel beyond the two hour time limit provided you don't then again transfer vehicles) or $8.20 per day. Seniors and children are half fare, and there are also myki passes available for a week 9or any period of 28 to 365 days.)

I'd be using the 901 SmartBus to Broadmeadows station. It departs from a bay of the Terminal 4 car park and is every quarter of an hour until 2100 hours on weekdays and half hourly on weekends and after 2100 on weekdays. Train frequencies from Broadmeadows are every 20 minutes or better for most of the weekday periods, and 20 minutes for most of the weekend days. During peak periods on weekdays, trains may be more frequent.

With the roadworks continuing on the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLnk, at times it can be a carpark so Uber or Skybus makes little sense given their exorbitant cost.

I understand the $6 charge for a Myki, however:
1. I already have a Myki so there's no cost involved on getting a Myki
2. When my parents arrive Melbourne they will need a Myki to travel around as well.
What I am thinking is whether $4.2 x 3 = $12.60 + $20 on Uber from Broadmeadows will be cheaper than spending $18 x 3 = $54 on Skybus. Despite I will lose 300 + 54 points from my Velocity Program + Amex Velocity Card.

More questions:

1. Does any had experience of catching Uber from the city to Melbourne Airport? Uber's website says $39-49 on UberX but does it include tolls? If tolls are included how much in total is a Uber fare? Because I wonder if it is $49 including tolls, it is actually chaper than 3 x $18 on Skybus.
2. If I am catching UberX from Melbourne or Brisbane Airports, do I need to pay surcharges for using the Airport pick up zones? Is it possible to avoid the surcharge by say for example request pick up from the Macdonalds outside Melbourne Airport? If so, is there a specific address that I should be looking for?

The cheapest way from Brisbane Airport to the rail network is by Bus.

From Brisbane Domestic/International Terminals there is a free bus (run by Brisbane Airport) to the DFO that operates every 30 minutes between 6:20am and 3:50pm.

From DFO to Toombul bus station the great circle bus (590) operates every 30 minutes and then it's simply a walk across the road to Toombul train station.

I normally drive to/from the Airport or catch the train from the city but last month I tried this method out (in reverse) and it took me 1hr 35 minutes from Toowong to the airport whereas the train would have taken about 57 minutes.

Basically, for an extra 38 minutes of travel, I saved $10 and each to their own but I don't think it was worth it.

1. Yes, that should include tolls. Assuming traffic isn't appalling, it is cheaper for three people to get an UberX to the airport from the CBD than for everyone to take the Skybus.
2. Yes, you will need to pay a small surcharge of a few dollars. No, drivers will likely no longer accept pickups from outside the geolocked area, as now they wait in a designated waiting zone.

From the airport take the bus (in T4) to Broadmeadows and transfer to the train. I already have a Myki so it's very cheap. Do it in reverse when you're departing Melbourne. No stress about missing your flight because of traffic hold-ups on the Tullamarine or Ring Road freeways. And far cheaper than taxis, Uber and Skybus.

Some people can't value their time too much to go spending so much extra of it to save a few bucks?
