Dressing nicely makes me feel like I'm being respectful to the airline and it's staff, as they are usually impeccably dressed, and provide us quality surrounds, food and drinks. You know this old chestnut. "Sometimes you can take the bogan out of economy, but you can't take economy out of the bogan."

Well put. My bogan friends would heartily agree (whilst polishing the chrome on their shiny monster utes...)

I've just returned from UK, flying Oman Air. I changed into PJs in the QANTAS lounge in MEL, with jeans and fleece on top till I got on the plane (MH), dep 2345. It isn't easy changing on the plane, so I got off in KL still in PJs, had a shower in the lounge and changed there back into day clothes for the rest of the flights. Coming back, it was night flights MAN to Muscat and from KL to MEL. Oman gave me PJs, which I put on in the plane, but I kept them on till I got back to KL, then changed into QANTAS PJs in the lounge and back into day clothes when I got off in MEL. I only had time in KL for the shower and a quick drink. I wouldn't have had time to change on the ground in Muscat as the flight was 30 min late and I just made the next gate with 5 min to spare. Anyway, I wanted to try to sleep on all 3 legs. There were no comments when I checked into the lounges. I was going for comfort and so that my day clothes wouldn't be as creased on arrival.

Update:

I travelled from Melbourne dressed respectfully in shoes, chinos and a knitted long sleeve top.

I politely entered into the lounge, reciprocating the delightful greetings from the QF staff. Had a light meal and tea before heading to the showers.

Following a good freshening up, I emerged into the lounge resplendent in my under armour top, Nike basketball shorts and an affordable pair of thongs.

After 1 more cup of tea I proceeded to the boarding gate and had a particularly comfortable trip.

I hope both camps feel appeased by my conduct.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

I always fly EK, usually in F. I never fly Qantas due to consistently ordinary service and behaviour in the past. Whereas I love wearing shorts with socks and Rossi boots, its significantly daggy. I don't mind looking daggy most of the time but it just doesn't seem right in lounges like DXB F. So I wear nice jeans and shirt with a pair of shorts lurking in my carry-on, which I quietly slip into behind the closed doors of the F suite once on board!

I sent this feed to one of my friends today, she replied siding with the majority stating "comfort dressing is the downfall of society".

I fly through Abu Dhabi 2 - 4 times per month. The lounge has a gym which I always use so I never really think twice about dressing in athletic wear. It is now just habit.

In the coming months I have several QF international lounge visits - I am now considering potentially I need some new habits!

Hope you have a shower and change into different activewear after the gym and before getting on the plane!

But do you go as far as wearing affordable thongs as advocated by another contributor to this thread? (Hopefully they are referring to the the type worn on the feet.)

I get what you mean by 'consistently ordinary service' but I'm unsure of what you mean when you mention 'behaviour'? Is it bad behaviour by fellow passengers (which I to see on about 1/3 of my flights) or crew, or maybe something else?

Absolutely - under armour fits neatly in carryon and doesnt wrinkle. Although - side note - the showers / bathrooms at the current Etihad F lounge have to be some of the most average going around.

Hopefully when the new airport opens (perhaps by 2030) the airline will use the opportunity to get back the premium feeling.

They are not making it easy to justify keeping up Platinum status!

Surely this question was a joke/ piss take ? Fashionable, Adidas, Under Armour and thongs in the same sentence? Why not set the whole package off with a cool bandanna?
