Qantas lounge access during international / domestic transfer at LAX

Hi all - long time reader, first time poster.


I am flying BNE to LAX (QF15) next week, with a connection to Seattle on a QF ticketed Alaska Airlines flight. We have a 2.5hr stopover, and on the off chance we get through customs and baggage drop off quickly (it never hurts to be optimistic!) I was hoping to use the Qantas lounge in TBIT for breakfast and a shower before heading to Terminal 6 for the domestic flight. I'm QFF Platinum and read on here somewhere that the lounge can be accessed before domestic flights as long as it's a QF ticket number - is this correct?

Is our quickest option to go through the TBIT arrivals level TSA checkpoint? I'm assuming this gives access back into TBIT, and also seems like the most sensible option even if there is not enough time to get to the lounge. I haven't been to LAX since the airside connectors have been in use, so would appreciate any advice!

This is a good question, I've never thought about it. Technically the entry requirements are just written as "Next onward flight must be on a Qantas^, Jetstar Airlines+ or oneworld operated and marketed flight.#". It doesn't define between international or domestic.


Curious to see the response.

I have done this in the past. I was travelling MEL -> LAX -> CMH (Qantas ticketed fare) when my flight to CMH was cancelled due to mechanical reasons.


I was actually on the plane to travel to CMH but we never left the ground. Once we deplaned I was then rebooked on another flight some hours later via DFW. I went to the Qantas Lounge in TBIT as the AA Admirals Club in T4 was closed for renovations, and they were more than happy to let me shower and grab a bite to eat along with a coffee.

I must admit after I cleared immigration and dropped off my bags at the transfer desk I then cleared security at T4. I then used the T4 -> TBIT connector to get back to the Qantas Lounge. I do not know if you will be able to clear security at TBIT to access the lounge so you may have to go to at east T4 to clear security and double back.

I believe the AA Lounge has been completed in T4 which is now a Flagship lounge which are quote good (well at least the one in ORD was great when I visited in May) so it should have showers and it will be accessible to you given your Platinum status and is closer to T6. There is an airside connector from T4 to T6 which you can use as well.

But if you want to use the Qantas First Lounge in TBIT I don't see it really being a problem.

I think the 'operated and marketed' language will undo you.


In any event I doubt you have enough time, even though you can go airside from TBIT to T6, it's still a decent distance and US immigration can take some time.

Nick / townaz : Thanks for the recommendations for the AA Lounge, but I'm not sure the onward connection will be eligible as it is operated by Alaska (not a One World partner?). I could have flown AA for the domestic leg, but chose Alaska as past experiences with them have been far more pleasant. Maybe next time!

I thought the exact same thing until I read a review of the lounge on this site (by Chris) on April 27, which said :


  • Qantas Platinum, Platinum One and Chairman's Lounge frequent flyers travelling on a Qantas or Oneworld flight, including Qantas codeshare flights operated by non-Oneworld partners such as Alaska Airlines and Fiji Airways, or an American Airlines flight to any destination.

I couldn't specifically find that on the Qantas site though, and it doesn't really specify domestic or international. So as usual with lounge access, confusion reigns supreme haha...

Either way, as you mentioned I'm probably kidding myself about the timing to get in there, but having the info for future travels would certainly be handy.

Lachie77 entering the QF TBIT lounge is simple fast and easy and what's great is you have access QF tik/ alaska.i use this lounge 30 plus times a year just showing a QF p1 card when traveling a separate AA ticketed flights purchased in te US.i also am aware of colleagues traveling in bound of QF with layover in LA and traveling on AA ticketed travel having no problems with entry.worst case t 4 admirals club or with OW status the flagship.

You will definitely be able to access airside from the TBIT security. As you exit baggage claim (and recheck bags onto the conveyor belts after baggage claim), turn right and go through security there. That will take you into TBIT and up to the Qantas lounges.

You shouldn’t have a problem accessing them on a Qantas ticket.
Just ensure you leave enough time to get to your gate- it’s a long walk without moving walkways/escalators.

Yes you can do this no problems. I did the exact thing about 10 weeks ago on QF to Alaskan with a QF flight number. Stay in the QF lounge as long as you can as they may deny you access to the Alaska lounge if it’s full.


Don’t leave TBIT when you arrive from Aust and just walk back upstairs and then once you’re ready to go from QF to the Alaskan terminal use the connector, took me about 15 minutes to walk as it was pretty busy.
