Qantas Boeing 787, upgrade from premium economy to business

What do you think my chances are of an upgrade from PE to Business class on QF9 from Melbourne to London on the 26th of Jan. I’m a silver FF member with Qantas Club. Had a quick look on Expert flyer and seemed like there were about 6 seats still left and a whole bunch more that were blocked out.

Seat maps don’t necessarily indicate load. It’s the fare bucket availability that will help you gauge your potential chance of an upgrade

If past statistics were any indication, slim chance. Qantas reported very high load factors for this route especially with premium cabins in the past. This route hopefully should be less loaded with high status frequent flyers than QF1 which should ease your chances a bit, but only a bit.

J looks relatively open on this flight (J9 C5 D2 I0), so you may be in luck. Hope it comes through for you.

If you know anyone at Qantas, they can also check to see how many people have requested upgrades to see if your chances are any better.

Can you let us know how you get on? There’s always lots of people (like me) asking about availability - but rarely do people relay whether they were successful or not... thanks in advance!

Has anyone travelled by train Hong Kong to Shanghai yet, tips, suggestions would be welcome.

I have done the upgrade but it is at the gate sort of thing. This is a very popular flight.

A friend recently took this flight return and got upgraded economy to business on both legs and he’s a bronze. You might get lucky! Good luck!

I do not like your chances of an upgrade from PE to BC on a B787 as there are simply not enough BC seats. I am silver and have a swag load of forthcoming bookings, plus 400k points and was unable to crack it for 2 x BC seats for a recent return Melbourne / LA and SanFrancisco / Melbourne.

I’m taking the Mel-lax later in the year and a bronze unfrequent flyer. Was only able to get 1 business class Award flight, not 2. Got my wife to get the other ticket with her account (she is also bronze).

If that’s the flight going through Perth, I was of the understanding that no upgrades or point bookings for Bus Class were available.

My cousin flew on that flight in business on points to Perth last boxing day

It depends on the day and time of year. I have had upgrades on all flights I had in the last year or so, so quite that dire.
