Hi guys.


I've got a trip to AKL coming up and am flying J both ways. I wanted to ensure that I was on the 1-2-1 J class layout A330-200 (Which I am on MEL-AKL.) I got a notification to ring QF as my return leg had been changed. I told them I booked J because I believed that the A330's offer a better J product. They simply wanted to advise me that my return flight was now departing 2 hours earlier and when I confirmed that it was an A330, the woman told me that it was a 737. She kindly offered to put me on an A330 service which is the QF158 departing AKL for MEL at 1845. I was somewhat surprised to see on choosing my seat that it was a 2-2-2 layout, ie a different product.

How different is the 2-2-2 layout J class compared to the 1-2-1 layout J class on the A330 trans tasman flights?

Does anyone have any sources where I may be able to look at a video or some photo's at least?

Also, I am QF Silver, presumably I get to use the MEL QF intl J lounge in MEL, but what about in AKL?

It is very different. It will be the skybed 1, angled seat.


Qantas silver comes with a single entry lounge pass. But you're flying Business, so you enter the lounge on class of travel.

I'd recommend you don't waste your pass on the AKL J lounge.

You're flying in business class both ways so you'll have lounge access in both airports.

These old articles here (look for 'international two-cabin') and here give a glimpse of the older Skybed 1st Generation seat and cabin. It's nowhere as nice as the newer 1-2-1 cabin, but for a four hour trans-Tasman flight, it probably beats being on a 737.

As long as you don't need to sleep, the 2-2-2 Skybed 1 is still quite good and marginally better than a 737. You can access both the Emirates and Qantas lounge at Auckland Airport in addition to Melbourne's Emirates and Qantas lounges.

In your opinion, how much of a deterioration is it in terms of a product? BTW im Qantas Club Silver (Nearly Gold)

Mate, Qantas Silver really does nothing for lounges except for a single entry. It's really just a shiny card with a couple extra perks (check in counters, luggage). Plus being 'nearly' Gold won't help.


You're access to the lounge, in this case, is provided by your class of travel. You're flying Business, so can access the business lounges of oneworld airlines and emirates (if they're open). For Melbourne and Auckland, I'd probably go Emirates.

As for your previous question, skybed 1 ain't great. I had it back from Singapore last year. But for a flight across the Tasman, I'd be okay it with it over a 737.

Keep in mind there is only 1 332 with the Skybed left, so there is always a chance of the 332 swapping to the new configuration.

This should bring up some some video reviews that people have posted on youtube on the Qantas a330-200 business class. According to the Qantas website, there are only 2 a330-200's left in the 2-2-2 configuration.

Only one left now - VH-EBG. The other EBL got converted to Suites late in 2018.

I have noted the above comments and responses and have a similar query. My Wife and I will be return to Melbourne on 21/02/19 on QF154 ( 12.05 pm) from Auckland in J and travel agent itinerary state the plane is an A 332 and seating is for an A and B seat. Qantas E- ticket notes that the plane is an A 330 and has scheduled departure same date and time, but no allocated seats. Need I worry, any ideas out there?

This is the seating chart for your flight - it's definitely the old-style A330.

Of course always subject to change and any 332 sub will give you a better seat.


In the last week EBG has mostly been operating QF43/44 SYD-DPS with some domestic routes in between
