The answer would be NO. Since Jo' burg is your first entry into South Africa, you would need to collect your checked luggage, go through customs and immigration and recheck for your onward flight to Cape Town.

Correct. And, if you're not familiar with Jo'burg airport, be on the lookout for touts wanting money to help get you and your baggage from international arrivals to domestic departures (the terminals adjoin and you don't need to go outside). These touts can be quite aggressive, several youths surrounding you and demanding money for the "service". There are official porters (orange shirts and caps) who are paid about 20 rand per bag, not the hundreds demanded by the touts. I strongly suggest you find an "orange" guy asap, making sure you have the small change in rand with you to pay. 20 rand = A$2 approx.

If you're super concerned about the connection -
We used a service from BidAir (think BidVest etc) last year in Cape Town called "Flythru" for a international to domestic connection assistance.
We had a tight connection from our SIA arriving to BA domestic flight leaving so thought it would be handy for potentially getting a nudge through immigration and knowing which way to go etc. Primarily did this because we were travelling with the proverbial "it" tonne of luggage. Was about $100 Aus for two people from memory. For us it was pretty convenient not having to worry about finding oversize luggage collection and drop off etc.
