SkyNook is an economy class ‘mini-suite’

The last row of the economy cabin is usually the last place any traveller wants to be.

Directly behind that row is a cluster of toilets, and often a busy and noisy galley kitchen.

Now, an innovative concept is turning that space into a more desirable mini-suite.

Developed by Collins Aerospace, the SkyNook takes advantage of how the shape of the plane narrows towards the tail.

“Widebody fuselages taper inward toward the back of the aircraft, often reducing the standard triple economy row of seats into a double,” Collins explains, leaving “unutilised space between the sidewall and the seat.”

The SkyNook fills this gap with a bespoke “convertible console” which can be used for a bassinet, pet carrier or service animal.

The SkyNook concept is highly adaptable.

It could even be used by “someone flying with a fragile, bulky item that cannot be checked.”

Beyond this two-and-a-half-seat configuration, “the suite includes a deployable privacy divider, dampening cabin noise and providing a visual barrier from the aisle, lavatory queues and galley traffic.”

This divider adds privacy to create a 'mini-suite' effect.

“Users are afforded extra seclusion to feed and soothe young children, minimise disruptions to fellow passengers, or simply relax in a more peaceful retreat.”

The SkyNook is a finalist in the Passenger Comfort category of the 2026 Crystal Cabin Awards, an annual honour recognising innovation, excellence and creativity in aircraft cabin interior design that elevates the air travel experience.

I can see this being popular with "honeymooners".

I somewhat disagree - the last row of a cabin can be a great economy seat - no one behind you punching the unresponsive touch screen, guilt-free recline, your own little world.

Could just make two wider seats for larger passengers to use.. Would expect there would be a lot more of those than bassinets or service animals.

Or make it one extra-wide seat, an economy 'suite for one'?

It's great to see the industry taking a more innovative approach to enhancing the flying experience. Great move, I can't wait for more 'out there' design ideas coming in the future.

What a clever idea!!  I wonder if those two seats could also 'combine' to allow a comfortable seat for large of 'bariatic' passenger who would otherwise try and cram into a regular seat?
