Virgin Australia launches new iPhone app

Virgin Australia's latest iPhone and iPad app is everything you'd expect from the airline, and goes way beyond the 'latest deals' nature of its Flight Specials app.

Travellers can track their upcoming flights, see their Velocity Frequent Flyer points and status credits balance and even call forth a digital membership card to help expedite their entry into Virgin Australia lounges.

Flights can also be booked from within the app including sales and Happy Hour fares, existing bookings are but a click away…

… and when it comes to status credits, graphs highlight how you’re tracking this membership year:

Rounding out the functionality is the ability to transfer points to family members, claim missing points, explore the benefits of your current and next-highest membership level and see which particular benefits are available at a given airport before your next Virgin Australia flight.

Apple iPhone users can download the Virgin Australia app from the App Store, while Virgin Australia tells Australian Business Traveller that a similar app for Android devices will be released "soon".

Still no native resolution for iPhone 6 (and above) devices. Qantas hasn't either despite the phone being released ~15 months ago. If the tigerair app can do it, surely these two can as well.

It's a massive improvement but after playing around with it, I can't help but think it's very gimmicky. Bank and travel apps generally have a "here for business" feel. This app has an entertainment feel. Perhaps VA are trying to recapture some of that youthful, playfulness they had in the Virgin Blue days?

Regardless, it's good to have all the functionality on one app, including the rubbish IFE.

When it works! Mine fails every other day or so. It's also very clunky with all those sliding panels. I know the UX people think they're sexy, but I suspect it works best on an iPhone 6+ not a standard iPhone
