Now I know they would rather move Sydney than do it, but I came across this in the West Australian. Interesting thought, cuts reliance on Dubai. Most probably will never happen but who knows
Yesterday Qantas chief Alan Joyce told The West Australian that WA could âbecome the hub for non-stop operations to Europeâ with passengers from the Eastern States flying into Perth to join the 787 nonstop services.

Certainly a possibility. Two years for QF to exploreall these options.
That said a Qantas Domestic to Qantas International transfer at Perth is even more difficult than Sydney
Wouldn't be hard to fix airside shuttle like Sydney would be the same

What Sim1 didn't add in his quote above from The West, was that Plan A is for Qantas domestic to move to the Qantas international terminal, from memory in 3-4 years time, which would just about co-incide with AJ's could be/might be introduction of direct flights to the UK.

Not all that difficult to 'isolate' a gate in the ITB and make it for a domestic arrival/departure.
Just like DRW and ADL do for International arrival/departures from a domestic and only terminal

There are some good reasons why this might happen. Emirates has used up all of its rights to service German cities, and has long wanted to fly to Berlin and Stuttgart. Qantas still has rights following the withdrawal of Frankfurt services. IIRC those rights could be used to fly to Berlin. From Qantas' viewpoint, a DXB-Berlin service could potentially carry Emirates traffic and would also connect with the Air Berlin OneWorld hub.

Australia has rights to 25 flights/week into Germany.
None of which are being used.

Not going to happen.
The majority of pax are transiting anyway so there's no benefit for them to transit PER instead of DXB. Especially when DXB offers dozens more connections than PER-Europe could ever hope for.

I doubt it will happen. The Dreamliner could certainly make Eastern/Central Europe (albiet only just), but the deal QF have with Emirates requires all of QF's Europe flights go through Dubai (from what I know). In addition, it probably makes more sense for QF to fly from Dubai to a secondary European destination so that QF could use its own flights and all of Emirates' flights from Australia to generate feed.
That said I certainly think that there's a significant possibility for a PER-DXB service with a Dreamliner. And PER-SIN may get upgraded to a Dreamliner too. But I wouldn't expect any chance of Perth to Europe direct until after the Emirates alliance ends, which it probably will not.

Probably a case of AJ replying to a question in a positive sense, rather than initiating the discussion. Perth - London on 787s is a favourite subject in The West, but now seems out of range. PER-DBX appears more likely.

I read that too and thought the journo was getting a bit carried away. Is Perth-LHR non-stop even possible?
Perth-Dubai-Frankfurt (or Berlin) though ticks lots of boxes.
It is still two years before we see a 787-9 in the skies, and any new exciting routes are unlikley to take precedence over replacing current 747 routes. Probably 2018 before we see some new pairings and ports.

There is a long way to go and you can only believe what actually happens....Of course there are a few of us that would "dream" to see Perth on a European departure board.
What major cities can the 787-9 reach from Perth? Surely not London?

PER-DXB... There is already a lot of capacity from PER to the Middle East, however by the time enough aircraft have been delivered for Qantas to open up new routes there could be demand, if the other carriers haven't already increased services.
Does anyone else think it could be a bit much if there was another carrier operating to the Middle East?
