VA has already said it will fly SYD-HKG from next year, and I for one am looking forward to this. About time we had some competition on the route and an alternative to the OneWorld duopoly of Qantas and Cathay Pacific. Hopefully the flights will connect neatly into Virgin Atlantic's HKG-LHR service too because I doubt we will ever see Virgin Atlantic back in Australia. What does everybody else here think of flying Virgin Australia to Hong Kong? I'll definitely be up for it!
I will definitely be up for it too. Flying to HK via Singapore makes a 9 hours direct flight to a 13 hour trip. A bit of a hassle and waste of time but this way helps me retain my VA platinum. I wonder which fleet they will fly to HK and how many classes?

Also, whilst the Virgin flight may end up connecting with the V Atlantic flight by chance, I doubt that is much of a concern to VA. The O&D market is quite large, they have a connecting partner (and owner) in HKG useful for Chinese / Nth Asia and that whilst the Virgin airlines share a name, there is little connection between the two anymore. Atlantic has its bed buddy, Delta and VA has its orgy of owners (some of whom fly to London).

You have no evidence to prove that they announced that. i know virgin are planning beijing and hong kong flights but they haven announced more details as to which Aus cities they are flying from.

Hong Kong carriers have used up all their allowed flights to the major Australian gateways (PER/MEL/BNE/SYD), there is nothing in the bilateral preventing any HKG carrier from starting new service to any other Australian port.
VA got 1,925 seats/week between the 4 major AU ports and mainland China and 7 flights/week to HKG in June. They have not yet said which of the 4 Australian ports those flights will be using. These allocations are not able to be used for codeshares. Thus, VA will be operating them. Both applications listed the routes as between Australia and PEK/HKG using A332s by 1 June 2017

Thanks Himeno, but whenever there is talk about carriers using up capacity, it is talking about the big 4 is it not?. There may be some older agreements, but AFAIK, all other airports are a free for all / most countries.
In any case, I'm willing to argue that Virgin will not fly to HKG from any airport other than a big 4 airport as that offers the greatest return to their Chinese partner. That's why I'd also be shocked if it wasn't Sydney as I'm making an educated guess that would be Hong Kong Airlines first choice of destination if they could fly there.
Okay... Since Mel and Syd are seamlessly connected, it is not too different from Mel-hkg.
Wait a moment, how can I travel between Syd's intl and domc terminals without wondering around the confusing shuttle bus stops or paying for the underground train? Can VA do something that is similar to the dedicated shuttle bus operated by Qantas?

Where did VA say that they would fly SYD-HKG? All the info I've seen so far just says "an Australian city" to HKG with no mention of SYD.
