Making the most of Qantas' red hot Double Status Credits promo

By David Flynn, March 2 2017

Whatever you do, don't book a Qantas flight this week until you've signed up for this fantastic promo!

Get ready to fast-track your way to Qantas GoldPlatinum or even Platinum One status: for a limited time, all Qantas frequent flyers can earn a double serve of status credits on domestic and international flights.

Here's the skinny on the the Red Roo's red hot offer.

It applies to domestic and international flights on Qantas, as well as Emirates flights between Australia and New Zealand – provided they are under a Qantas flight number.

That includes the trans-Tasman leg of Emirates' Airbus A380s from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Auckland, plus Sydney-Christchurch: just make sure your booking and ticket carries a QF flight number instead of the native EK flight number (for example, EK418 Sydney-Auckland doubles as QF8418).

As is the norm with these double status credit offers, you have to register before making any bookings, or you won't earn those extra credits you desire. Click here to go straight to the promo sign-up page.

Your booking – or bookings, because we know you're going to write up a few to take advantage of this – have to be made by March 6, 2017. Leave it until March 7 and guess what? No double status credits for you!

However, the travel dates for those bookings can stretch through to February 19, 2018. This gives you almost a year of travel up your sleeve: so if you've got conferences to attend, regional offices to visit or just holidays to plan, do it now.

Book where you like: You don't have to book directly with Qantas. We've confirmed with Qantas that the double status credits offer is valid "via all booking channels, both direct and indirect, provided (travellers) register for the offer via qantas.com".

Determine your goal: are you trying to retain Gold membership, reach or retain Platinum or maybe even get across the line to Platinum One?

Now map out how this double status credits promotion will get you there. Start by checking your current status credit count and how you’re tracking towards the end of membership year (when those status credits are wiped and you start again).

Don't forget to take into account the Qantas loyalty bonus: when you hit 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 status credits you can choose between either 8,000 Qantas Points or 50 status credits. You may find that one double status credits booking will trigger a loyalty bonus or two, and those 50-100 status credits could be all you need to reach your goal.

A bit earlier in the year than last year's offer but this is fantastic. These offers are a big help.

I have a trip coming up but I am unlikely to know the exact date before March 6th.  Can I book a business class ticket now, then change the flight by a few days when I know the exact date, and still expect to get the double status credits? Or will changing the travel date after March 6th make me ineligible?

Just read the fine print.  If you change your initial booking the double status credits does not apply.

I read that to be if you change your booking to travel outside the promotion period. Ie chanhe to be after feb 19 2018 gets nothing. But change to travel before that and you are fine.

Does this include bookings made using sites like Expedia or the various ones popping up in Skyscanner, or do they fall outside of the definition of travel agent?
Any booking should be fine but if I were you I would contact Qantas just to make sure. They are the ones setting the rules.

In response to several reader queries along these same lines, we've double-checked with Qantas and confirmed the double status credits offer is valid "via all booking channels, both direct and indirect, provided (travellers) register for the offer via qantas.com".

Can anyone confirm that if I cancel a booking made yesterday evening (I know, timing right!) and rebook that I will be eligible?
Yes, because this will be a new booking with a new booking number you will qualify for double status credits.

Am I imagining it, or did the business class fares all go up at the same time this offer came out.  I was looking at an NZ flight via BNE or MEL ex SYD and the fares are no a lot more expensive than they were a couple of weeks ago.  No doubt they will go down again after this offer expires

This always happens when there are these offers. Still with DSC it should be much cheaper per SC than a sale fare with standard SCs.

Be careful if you pay using a Qantas voucher. Normally these type of offers use the date the voucher was purchased and not the date the flights were booked (many readers would have bought gift vouchers during the 5 points per dollar promotion around Christmas). If you use a voucher from earlier in the year or from 2016 the offer probably won't trigger. My experience is that Qantas will eventually manually credit the bonus status credits, but it involves quite a bit of follow up and haggling. Qantas will also make you wait 6 weeks before they will consider manually crediting the bonus status credits (as per there terms and conditions 'Bonus Status Credits may take up to 6 weeks after completion of your travel to be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account').

We had no issues with a voucher we used for last year's offer - but I must say we canvassed the use of the voucher when we were booking.   Have made another booking this year to correspond with a Panama Canal cruise in terms of the double SC offer (No voucher this time!).  Will be sufficient to keep us on Gold..

As a matter of interest - are you able to fly up and back to JKT on the Wednesday, given they are best fares?  Do you have to clear customs/immigration or can you just stay in Lounge and re-board aircraft and come back to SYD on same aircraft?

Quick question will using points to upgrade still yield the Double SC's from the initial fare? (As apposed to only returning the initial SC) I can't see anywhere in the conditions regarding this and I don't want to accidentally negate the bonus later down the track.

05 May 2016

Total posts 526

Upgrading shouldn't be an issue as that doesn't change the booking date. You would earn DSC for the fare you booked not the class you upgraded to.

In the unlikely event you have a problem you could ring QANTAS after the 6 weeks and get it sorted out. Be sure to keep your booking receipt, your boarding passes and the confirmation email for registering for the offer.

Why didn't we get any notification? I only knew about this from this site's Facebook posting. I'm assuming it applies to NZ residents (doesn't say it does not apply)?

QANTAS selectively sends targeted emails even for promotions open to everyone. Unfortunately but understandably they don't give any advance warning.

Tried to book (J) to Europe last night through Qantas. The QF operated flights are $1760 more than the EK operated ones. Just Qantas trying to trick loyal followers again.

05 May 2016

Flights to LHR all the way on QF metal give good value. It's important to read the T&Cs for the promo which clearly identify that EK operated and/or marketed flights to Europe are ineligible.

Does anyone know whether this would include any changes to existing bookings? E.g. if I have to make changes to one of my bookings and end up paying for a higher fare (e.g. Economy Flex instead of Economy Saver) would this fall under the 2x promo?

05 May 2016

Total posts 526

Provided the new flight is also QF marketed and operated or a qualifying Emirates flight to NZ with a QF flight number (i.e. QF marketed) during the appropriate window it should work.

I had to change some flights booked using last year's promo and still got the double status credits.

Maybe by putting this wish out there the little genie in the bottle Tim Clark will grant this wish for all his loyal Skywards members...

Not received my extra SC's from 50% extra offer late last year as yet...I did register prior to booking and the small print does say up to 8  weeks to be posted. Just watch out if you are close to anniversary date as you may not get them in time....

05 May 2016

Total posts 526

If they come after you anniversary date they should still count to the year you flew but you could be several weeks without the status you should have. If travel is discretionary best not to leave it too close to your anniversary date where possible.

Hi everyone! I am travelling from USA to Australia lateron in September 17. I registered in time and booked in time, then I noticed in the fine print something about sectors. "Only one double Status Credits offer can be used per individual qualifying segment of your itinerary."

I'm not sure what it means but i'm concerned it's not good, as I have 3 flights each way in my trip. (Kalamazoo-Chicago-LAX-Brisbane)
Does it mean only one of the flights in my trip gets double SC's?
If anyone explain this i'd be grateful!

Only one of those flights is a QF operated flight. The only flights that qualify are QF marketed (i.e. QF flight number) flights on QF operated aircraft and some Emirates flights between Australia and New Zealand booked under the QF flight number.

You can only get double status credits once for each segment that qualifies. So you'll get double credits for the LAX-BNE flight but not for the flights in the US.

05 May 2016

So you'll get double credits for LAX-BNE and BNE-LAX. One serve of double status credits for each of those flights.

Chris - this turned out to be another Qantas con as far we concerned here in the USA.  Wanted six business class seats but if you tried complete the 'promo sign-up page' it came up with web errors for the entire duration of the limited campaign. Now that the promotion has expired we can log on.

Hope other Australian BTs had better luck.

Does anyone happen to remember which months (in previous years) does the Double Status and 50% Status promos come out?

I missed this promo, but have 6-7 international flights planned this year so it might be worth waiting for the bookings

05 May 2016

Last year DSC came in April and before that there was quite a gap. Can't see another DSC offer for everyone happening till at least somewhere around December.

Targeted 50% promos are made at various times during the year. You may/may not get one.

Has anyone received their double status credit points yet. I travel about 7 weeks ago and still haven't receive the extra points.  Is this correct??

You should call QANTAS as more than 6 weeks have elapsed. The T&Cs say to allow 6 weeks (though in practice usually it credits within about a week). They may require a copy of the email informing you that you were registered and the invoice they gave you for the booking.

You could find you have to do the same for other qualifying bookings.
