Sydney Airport a "ghost town" after Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin flight cancellations

In brief: Sydney airport has been effectively shut down as the second wave of the volcanic ash cloud sweeps across south-eastern Australia, with some visitors describing it as a "ghost down".

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia cancelled all domestic and international flights to and from the airport yesterday, although the airlines expect to resume flights late this afternoon -- see our our lead story for updates, and keep an eye on our @AusBT Twitter channel for up-to-the-minute changes.

However, flights to and from Tasmania and New Zealand remain grounded for today.
