AA will start classifying their first class tickets with business class fare codes. That means QF frequent flyers will earn far fewer points and status credits when flying AA on a QF FF number. Used to be a great way to retain status.

Is this official and from what date? Can't say I'm surprised. Has proved to be a great bonus over the years.

That's a sweeping statement, will this apply to SYD - LAX (ie all international flights) or just domestic?

This only applies to 2 class domestic US flights from 11 Jan. Class changes are F to J, A to D, P to I and the upgrade/award booking class will change from X to R and Z to U.  This does not apply to the 3 class LAX/SFO - JFK & LAX/MIA.

It also means redemptions will be cheaper.  To be fair, First Class redemption rates for what the product delivered were ridiculous.

I have received notice that my bookings have been downgraded. Not sure that I appreciate it after the event. The product is the same but expected points and status points will not be

Interesting that their booking system is still booking First Class after that date...

I have ""A" class bookings for Jan 16th  DCA-DFW and have not had any advise, still shows in the booking as that

There is a whole Flyertalk thread on this subject.

The key will be whether QF/BA etc will consider AA Domestic First Class (J,D,I) on a two-cabin service as First Class bookings or Business Class bookings for Status Credit/Tier Point earning purposes.

i.e. Will QF/BA etc create an exception for AA Domestic two-cabin service?

Anyone knows if QF/BA etc. have made any changes to their accrual charts for AA?

Update:

From the BA website today:

"AA operated flights flown with two-cabin aircraft within the United States (including Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands) may be branded as First Class, but will earn miles based on Business Class (J,D,I,R) booking codes."

FYI. My redemption flight on AA (used QF points to redeem) has been "downgraded" from "Z" (OW award first class) to "U" (OW award business) even though the same product.

Qantas have made these note on their charts:

~ Effective for travel on or from 11 January 2017, American Airlines First Class domestic bookings will be eligible to receive Qantas Points at the Business earn category rate due to booking class changes made by American Airlines.
# Effective for travel on or from 11 January 2017, American Airlines will only allow flight bookings in A, F and P classes within the US for flights between New York and San Francisco and between New York and Los Angeles when these routes are operated by a three-cabin aircraft to earn at First Frequent Flyer Earn Category.

Maybe they need to start selling these tickets and call them "Business" class... As nice as the status credits and points were, they were definitely never up to First class standard, if even Business at all...

When I interact with AA agents on the phone and at the counter I will certainly use the term "Business Class". AA can continue to fool themselves and market the product as "First" Class but for all intent and purposes AA has aligned premium cabins on domestic sectors in line with European and most Asia Pac carriers. I have no time for delusions and denials.

Sorry to bump this back up, but wondering if anyone has worked out the best status runs to do on AA now with the booking class?
