Qantas has finally cancelled the remaining 8 A380s from its 2006 order with Airbus. No word on any arrangement for substitution to another Airbus model. This has been expected for quite some time. But when all the 747s are gone there may be a shortage of long-haul seats for a couple of years until the 777X becomes available. That's my guess anyway.

Nice to see Emirates with 100+ A380's are ordering another 20.

Unfortunately that may not be the case, as Emirates’ order is not firm, meaning this could spill the end of A380 production.

Dont’t be so sure sgb.

Emirates are poised to pull the pin due to issues with Trent 900 rolls Royce engines not meeting their expectations.

Possibly ordering more 777x at the expense of current 787 orders and purchasing A350 and/or A330NEO instead of A380’s.

Sadly the A380 program could be coming to an end.

The A380 is the only way to fly long haul. Nothing comes close. I hope AJ goes the A350 because that’s as close as we’ll get to the delight of flying the A380. The A350 is current technology, a better aircraft than the great but over hyped 787 or an ancient 777 technology. The 777x will be another 747-800. Old but new.

..it's a pity to see this trend. I would be one who'd pay a little extra to travel in A380's. Pretty much everyone travelling design their routes to include an A380 if it's on offer. Especially an Emirates one!!

...hope Alan orders a whole lot of A350's. They're heaps more comfortable than the 777's

When the 380’s are all gone in 10-15 years we’ll look back and remember them with fondness.

These haven't really been 'planned' anyway. I suspect that without project sunrise aircraft arriving before 747s are retired, routes are going to be downsized from 747s to a330 and 787s which is a real reduction of seats. Hopefully they will introduce additional frequencies at that time.

It'll be a great day when all the Qantas Airbus380s are gone. It was the company's biggest mistake. It should have purchased a long haul Boeing, either the 777 or the latest technologically updated 747. Unfortunately 20/20 hindsight is totally useless. The squeezy 787 just doesn't cut the mustard for long haul comfort. I ask again - when did Qantas management, including Alan Joyce, travel in the sardine section of a 787. They'd cease calling it a 'dreamliner' if or when they do.

Airbus A380. Lovely aircraft for passengers for long haul. Boeing 787 the opposite. The Boeing 777x is interesting. Wider cabin that 787. But not currently in service. Airbus A350 would be best for long haul

FYI, a little more context here from an AusBT interview with Alan Joyce back in 2016, where it was made clear that these remaining orders weren't planned to ever eventuate:

AJ travelled on QF9 to LHR last week IIRC, doubt he’s travelled in the ‘sardine section’ in a long long time though.

It is the quietest aircraft I've flown on in the Qantas fleet and I don't think it was a mistake at all. Look at the demand for their Kangaroo route and you can see the a380 frequently gets filled to the brim. Even a 777 or 747 doesn't have that capacity. It certainly doesn't look like they are making a mistake with a380s because they are planning to keep them far into the future.

I agree though that the 787 is quite tight - would have been better if they chose the a350. Here's hoping their sunrise 777x/a350 will be a more comfortable experience.

Djtech, I don’t think high yield on one A380 a day to LHR is a sufficient justification for the fleet of 12. Retaining aircraft doesn’t prove that buying them was a good decision. It would appear that they are of no value as used aircraft, so replacing them would be a large cost to QF.

While the A380 is liked by passengers, I side with the view that QF would have been better off financially with a larger fleet of 777s.
