are these prices reflective of the general hysteria around this flight or are they a "premium" for the nonstop experience and reduced loads etc?

I noticed that the recent "sale" ended the day the double status points started. I'm looking for London Heathrow to Sydney return (I live in London) in Business, and it's around $10K AUD, even when looking at many different dates in different months. Unbelievable.

Quoted 22K online last month for 1 x business & 3 x PE return Perth to London; Zurich to Perth

We would have the experience with Qantas but simple economics stops us. Yes think a lot of the hype is about the zero stop but its not that big a deal given a stop at Changi only adds an hour or so in the great scheme of things so its important to do your rearch.
We decided on Singapore Air for the seats and Itinerary above with a total cost of about 14K and cant argue with that.

There’s a third option: are all airlines’ prices inflated at that time of year because of the school holidays? Have you checked whether other airlines’ prices are higher as well for those same dates, or is it just Qantas?

good point, but not just school holidays, it is also peak tourism season in Europe because it's the middle of summer.

Members, any idea what the penalty is on SCs when flying Emirates to LHR from Melb or Sydney in lieu of Q

No penalty if on a QF fare, though the double status offer is only available on QF metal.

If you are an AMEX Platinum (or Centurion) cardholder, I was able to book a flight last night, SYD-LHR, (QF1 and QF2 return) for $7600, flying in July '18. This is by calling the Platinum concierge.

A forgotten benefit of holding an AMEX Plat card - you do find some extraordinary discounts for flights and hotels! The $1200 annual fee gradually disappears haha. :)

I'm interested to see what the preference will be for people from east coast - via PER or via SIN?

Via SG for sure. Going via Perth feels like bad trigonometry!

For me, Definitely Singapore. This will become an even more obvious choice once all A380's are upgraded to the new business class seats.

I'm heading off to the UK in April 2019 and will be flying J. I thought the flight from PER/LHR would be the go (as I have rellies in Perth) but prices at the moment are quite high. The Singapore route might be a much cheaper option overall but it would have to be a better seat than what Qantas have on their 380s.

In my experience airfares from Australia to Europe tend to be more expensive than the other way around. Someone with more knowledge of economics than me will know why, perhaps the level of competition? I'm a short hop from Oslo and regularly buy business class fares from Oslo to east-coast Australia (ex-EU) for around $2,000-2,500pp using OneWorld alliance airlines. You need to plan ahead and no changes/refunds are allowed obviously. But my parents took advantage of the recent QF sale and paid well over $5,000pp for exactly the same flights in reverse.
