Here are the 'Aussie icon' names of Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Here are the 'Aussie icon' names of Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliners

After a public competition to name the first eight members of the Qantas Boeing 787 fleet after 'Aussie icons', the airline has revealed which monikers made the cut.

And they are:

  • Dreamtime
  • Great Southern Land
  • Uluru
  • The Great Barrier Reef
  • Skippy
  • Quokka
  • Boomerang
  • Waltzing Matilda

Those names will be painted under the cockpit window of each aircraft.

Qantas hasn't revealed which name will be given to the very first red-tailed Boeing 787 until it arrives in October (our money is on Uluru or Dreamtime).

Pretty much spot on I reckon, good choices. Waltzing Matilda to be the first.

I think the names are okay, certainly better than the likes of 'Vegemite', but Skippy and Waltzing Matilda really?

Very disappointing that Planey McPlaneface didn't get over the line.

I recommended the aircraft be named

Stevo
Davo
Shazza
Bazza
Wazza
Jono
Marto
Mick

They seemed pretty Aussie to me

Very poor Qantas. You run a competition but don't reveal the results in order of vote!! No transparency, no accountability again. I'm one of 45,000 mugs who voted.

Who really cares? It was a bit of fun and public involvement. Not an election.

They both would be a bad omen.

It'd keep departing then having to return to the gate again and again for money.

Oh nice. That's not anywhere near as cringe-worthy as I expected them to be. That said, Skippy and Waltzing Matilda are borderline on the cringe-worthy scale, but passable ;-)

I was hoping the aircraft were going to be named after native Australian birds ... starting with Emu and Cassowary

Nobody in their right mind would name a plane after something as terrifying as a cassowary!

Why? What's wrong with naming an aeroplane after a large ungainly flightless bird? 😂😂😂

Because that bird cannot fly.  Not a good representation of a new aircraft, or any aircraft for the matter.
