Update: Emirates first class still open to Qantas Points bookings

Qantas and Emirates say the Gulf airline’s first class suites will remain available to be booked using Qantas Points at low ‘Classic Reward’ rates, despite a weekend tightening of redemption rules.

As we reported earlier today, Emirates revealed on Saturday it would restrict first class classic reward seats to Skywards frequent flyers members holding ‘elite’ status.

A notice tucked away on the Miles Calculator page of the Emirates website declares “Effective 12th May 2025 classic rewards in First Class will be a Tier benefit available only to Platinum, Gold and Silver tier members.”

Given this could be interpreted as restricting first class classic reward redemptions to only those Skywards members, rather than partners such as Qantas, it immediately and understandably set alarm bells ringing.

After all, flying first class with Emirates is widely considered to be one of the world’s best airline experiences.

Think private suites – the amazing meals (bring on the ‘unlimited’ Champagne and caviar) – the insane appeal of taking a shower at 40,000 feet to rinse off the day or freshen up before you land.

It’s also a very popular way to use Qantas Points, due to the long-standing partnership between Qantas and Emirates.

That ranges from 64,500 Qantas Points for an indulgent three-hour jaunt between Sydney and Christchurch to around 250,000 Qantas Points between Sydney and London or Paris.

Over the weekend Executive Traveller approached both Emirates and Qantas for comment; in response, both airlines advised that the changes relate specifically to Emirates' own Skywards program members, and not to partners such as Qantas.

In effect, they remove the ability of entry-level Skywards Blue members to use Skywards Miles to book a first class suite as a redemption reward, which now becomes a perk exclusive to Skywards Silver status status or higher.

“This change has been implemented to provide our premium and loyal members with more rewards, exclusive benefits, and greater access to Emirates’ renowned first class travel experience,” says a spokesperson for Emirates Skywards.

“Members of airlines which partner with Emirates Skywards are not impacted by this change.”

Qantas likewise had assured that the changes relate specifically to Emirates’ own Skywards program members, comfirming that Qantas Frequent Flyers continue to have access to first class reward seats on Emirates.

Emirates offers first class out of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth on both its flagship Airbus A380 superjumbos and long-range Boeing 777s, with the Melbourne-Dubai (EK404/EK405)  Boeing 777 featuring the airline’s latest ‘game-changer’ suites.

Will anybody from management have the guts to come out unequivocally and call an end to the defunct Emirates/QANTAS 'partnership', since even Stevie Wonder can see it's been over for a long time, in all but name.

Ditch the partnership and move on. As I've been saying for years, get into bed with QR instead, who after all has arguably a much better quality offering, is already OW, and doesn't have much less of a network than EK. And DOH is way better than DXB.

Qatar hates Qantas. Beyond being OW alliance members they will not be working more closely together.

So i've checked - on Emirates it is definitely blocked today if you are not a status member (which I am not).

On Qantas, First Class redemptions on Emirates are still possible. If it stays till tomorrow, I don't know, but I can definitely see 1 or 2 bookings available in November 2025. I had someone who was Bronze check and they can still see this as well.

@sunnybrae it's so over that Qantas and Qatar are best friends. Laughable.

All Classic Rewards in premium cabins are scarce as hen's teeth and Emirates on top of that impose taxes higher than outright economy ticket!

I did 2 EK first class sectors in 2024 as Qantas classic rewards from KL to DXB ad then DXB to Vienna. On the second flight only 4  of the 14 first class seats on the A380 were occupied and two of them were occupied by the parents of EK staff. Glad to see that first class will still be available to Qantas frequent flyers despite the insanely high taxes ex Australia, though if you pick up EK from Asia to Europe the taxes are way less.

I have been trying for 6 months to get either a 1st or Business class seat on Emirates Melb - Dubai using Qantas points anytime in June, July or August.  They either don't exist, or are so few that they are snapped up on release, and are unavailable.

From Melbourne they can sell them for money, so why bother? Try ex Adelaide or ex Kuala Lumpur and you may some luck.

QF can blame whoever they like, but reality is very simple - since introduction of Classic Scam you cannot buy Classic Rewards in premium cabin on QF metal anymore, does not matter what Qantas says they remove Classic Rewards and convert them into Classic Scam. But even before that buying J on QF was difficult, though still possible and F was not exists at all. I NEVER saw F from Australia to UK, EVER. So it would be more useful if QF have a look in mirror.
