Qantas reopens Melbourne first class lounge

Qantas will reopen its Melbourne international first class lounge today as the airline resumes overseas flights from the Victorian capital.

This morning's departure of QF35 to Singapore will mark Qantas' first international commercial flight from Melbourne in 20 months, and will be followed on November 27 by the restart of Melbourne-London flights.

With the Melbourne international business class lounge remaining closed until sometime in 2022, the Qantas First Lounge will become the go-to for all eligible travellers, including

  • business class travellers
  • Platinum One, Platinum and Gold-tier Qantas frequent flyers
  • Qantas Club members
  • business class travellers on Oneworld and partner airlines (such as Qatar Airways and Emirates)
  • Oneworld Emerald and Sapphire frequent flyers

This was the same approach used during the short-lived Australia-New Zealand travel bubble, and as was the case during the trans-Tasman bubble, the first class lounge's à la carte menu will be reshaped into more of a "premium lounge" offering.

But there'll still be some Qantas First Lounge favourites such as the iconic salt and pepper calamari, the 'hits the spot' toasted sandwich and the very Instagramable 'pavlova in a glass' with strawberries, passionfruit, marscapone and Persian fairy floss.

Qantas Chief Customer Officer Steph Tully says the Melbourne lounges will be open four hours prior to the departure of each flight – as will the checkin desks – to encourage travellers to arrive earlier given some of the new complexities and challenges of international travel.

That said, the airline is rolling out a sophisticated pre-departure system, built around the Qantas App and the soon to be launched Travel Pass app, to guide passengers through every step of their journey, including any Covid-19 PCR tests required by their destination.

"We plan to help our customers every step of the way," Tully says, likening the process to "hand-holding you through the new experience."

Great news. This my favourite lounge in Aus and one my fav's relative to other F lounges world wide. Small, intimate, quiet and classy.

Good news about the lounge reopening.

The international travel app has been a long time coming.  We have been hearing about it for quite a while but still nothing.  I'm am a bit surprised how long it has taken.

Any news on when the Singapore first (or even business) lounge will reopen?   I’ve got a QF flight to SIN - MEL next week but looks like nothing will be open in SG.

Qantas says it will open its Singapore Business Lounge in "early December", with the First Lounge expected to follow in early 2022 as demand rebuilds. Until the Qantas lounge reopens, travellers will be directed to Changi T1's SATS Premier Lounge.

What are the hours? Emirates flights get access, but as the only Melbourne Emirates flight in December is 22:30 and I don’t think Qantas has anything running that late, the lounge will be closed?

QF94 to LAX departs 11:25pm on December 19th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, 26th, 27th & 29th.

December 4th, 7th, 11th & 14th sees QF9 to LHR departing 6:45pm.

December 18th - 24th, 26th-30th (no service 25th and 31st) sees QF9 to LHR departing 7:40pm

The Qantas First Lounges are now supposed to open four hours ahead of any Qantas flight, so check the date of your Emirates flight and then check what Qantas flights are operating on the evening of that same date, and that'll give you the lounge's opening and closing hours.
