SilkAir to fly direct to Cairns, Darwin from Singapore

Singapore Airlines’ regional arm SilkAir will go non-stop on all flights between Singapore and both Cairns and Darwin from later this year in a move that cuts hours from the journey time to and from the Lion City.

The Virgin Australia partner already flies to northern Australia but in a triangular pattern on selected days of the week, forcing Darwin residents to backtrack via Cairns before turning around continuing their journey onward to Singapore.

Come May 30 2016, the stopovers disappear with direct Cairns-Singapore and Singapore-Cairns flights running on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and non-stop Darwin-Singapore services on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

SilkAir will continue to fly its Boeing 737-800 aircraft to both cities, complete with reclining leather seats – although not flat beds – in business class…

… where guests can enjoy complimentary meals with wine, wireless inflight entertainment via the SilkAir Studio platform and more.

The move follows parent company Singapore Airlines’ decision to launch non-stop flights from Singapore to Canberra and a second new route in Canberra-Wellington.

Virgin Australia Velocity members can earn Velocity frequent flyer points and also status credits with travelling on most fare types with both SilkAir and Singapore Airlines.

Singapore airlines and it's subsidiary Silk air have really cottoned on to the fact that Australia's regional cities are poorly served (if at all!!) By our so called National carrier. First Canberra, now Cairns and Darwin. Where next?

I think there is a number of factors at play here.

SQ and MI both get to play out of one Hub and can branch out and connect cities quite easily.

QF has to work with 5 major capital cities, but invariably "hubs" through SYD;  so actually QF does serve these ports, its just a geographic challenge to do so.

JQ/3K has got service out DRW/CNS/TSV so the QF group does have a presence, but only where there is sufficient O & D traffic for them to make some money.

I do agree though that CBR is a massive QF opportunity, that is likely going to be lost to SQ/NZ/VA.

3-4pw 738's CBR-AKL with QF should of worked ok, as JQ entering the CBR market with destinations such as:

MEL,OOL,ADL(why there is only 1 direct weekend service is beyond me..,CNS)

At a stretch EK/QF may have fould a CBR-DXB viable, but it is easier for them to direct their pax through SYD,MEL and even ADL.

As for what's next- I wouldn't be surprised to see an Asian carrier jump on seasonal BME flights.  It is a premium inbound destination and close to Asia.

Darwin is really badly off. flying QF Darwin - Europe: the first 8 hours gets you back to Darwin! (Darwin - Sydney - fly over NNW coast 4+ hours later...

even tho' there is Jetstar Darwin-singapore, getting Qantas to quote on darwin-singapore-DXB-LHR is all but impossible. I always thought ADL-DWN-Hong Kong would be viable, or even PER-DWN-HK....  but QF doesn't seem to have a major Asian partner (it doesn't play well with CX, and the Chinese airlines only fly to China!) so the entire Asian routing is all Sydney-centric.  This to me, seems like they are missing out...

Did silk air have traffic rights between cairns & darwin - if so that would be useful and are all triangle routes being discontinued?
