Qantas upgrades iPhone app, now 'full service travel companion'

Qantas is beefing up its Apple iPhone app, with an improved version packing more features and optimised for iOS 7 now available for download from the iTunes Australia Store.
The new app boasts "a smarter and more personalised interface to help streamline the day of travel experience for customers", according to Qantas.
This includes locating the best route to the airport, using data pulled from Google Maps; suggesting the best method for check-in; and serving up real-time flight updates and alerts on boarding time and gate.
When you arrive at your destination, the app also advises which baggage carousel your luggage can be retrieved from.
Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi touts the update as delivering "a full service travel companion" which "anticipates all your travel needs - putting timely and relevant information in your hand when you need it."
“It creates a personalised travel timeline to make airport departures and arrivals a breeze,” Strambi adds. "This lets our customers focus on the meeting they are flying to or the holiday reading they bought for their trip,"
As with the previous version, you can still buy airfares, book a hotel, view Frequent Flyer points and create sale and special offer fare alerts to preferred destinations.

Does it require iOS 7 or just optimised for it?

I'll give it two thumbs up if it is faster than the version it replaces!
I can book a flight and check in on the Virgin app before the Qantas app even loads.
... is it just me?

Virgin's app revolves around flight specials but you can check in and book flights through it too.

ap_syd, yes you can access virgin specials app to check-in, choose seats and bring up the boarding pass into your passbook app. Just click on the top right of the virgin australia flight spcecials main page to locate extras within the app.

I noticed their mobile boarding pass features gate numbers - hopefully Virgin follows suit on this one. That's my only criticism of the Virgin Passbook boarding.

It appears the passenger's OW status is still not detailed on the Passbook boarding pass, unlike the BA app.
Guess non-QFF will still need to use paper boarding passes to access priority lanes and lounges?
Is that correct?

I thought the app was tied to your QFF account so it'd be unusable for non-QFF itineraries anyways?

I believe it has the option, where you are able to enter your PNR and name to access bookings and subsequently allows check-in, upon which a Passbook boarding pass would be generated.

Yes the Qantas system is quite good with that. It list down all your flights even though it's not operated by Qantas. Good to know that it is listed on the app as well. Thanks tmsmile.
Shame it doesn't include one's OW status. One could do away with paper boarding passess when travelling domestically if that information was recorded on the Passbook boarding pass.

I have downloaded the app update, but am continually getting an error message saying that log in details are incorrect, which they are not. I hope it gets resolved, I'm sure it will, but it's frustrating none the less. What I can see, the app looks pretty good.

Downloaded and installed on iPhone 5 running iOS 7 and it's slow to open and doesn't work. It shows my points balance and location but none of my forward bookings and it takes an eternity to move between screens. I gave up and deleted it. Back to the old Qantas app (which I didn't delete and can see all my bookings) Passbook (which does show your OW status) and TripCase until the bugs are out....
