Qantas says it won’t let dogs, cats fly in the cabin

Qantas and Rex don’t plan to let pampered pets join their owners in the cabin.

Qantas says it won’t let dogs, cats fly in the cabin

Fur is flying after Virgin Australia outlined plans to let passengers bring their pets along for the ride on domestic flights.

What the airline terms as “everyday pets” – essentially dogs and cats – would be permitted in the cabin, enjoying the same status as currently limited to designated support animals instead of being consigned to the aircraft’s below-decks cargo hold.

The controversial move came after Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority relaxed the rules on passengers bringing their pets with them in mid-2022.

However, Qantas tells Executive Traveller it will not follow Virgin’s lead and issue boarding passes to all mutts and moggies; in accordance with long-standing practice, only authorised assistance or service dogs will be permitted in the cabin.

A Rex spokesperson said while the airline was “not ruling out the carriage of pets in the cabin... our policy for the carriage of assistant dogs remains unchanged and are welcome in the cabin.”

Pets are always welcome on Qantas, just not in the same cabin as humans...
Pets are always welcome on Qantas, just not in the same cabin as humans...

Virgin claims a poll taken via its Facebook page saw 85% of respondents in favour of the airline allowing pets in the cabin; additional research claiming nearly 70% of Australian pet owners would travel with their pet in the cabin, while 57% said they would fly more regularly if the service was a reality.

However, public response to Virgin’s announcement is divided. Social media comments are almost evenly split for and against, while a snap poll conducted by Executive Traveller saw 53% of people against Virgin’s new pet-friendly policy and 47% in favour.

Allowing dogs and cats in airline cabins is already widespread in the USA and Europe, although at a cost: most US carriers charge US$125 per pet on one-way domestic flights, while Lufthansa applies a €50-€70 levy per pet.

(Virgin confirmed it will charge passengers a yet-to-be-revealed fee for bringing their high-flying pets on board.)

During the pandemic, we even saw former racing greyhound Lewis upgraded from a kennel in the cargo hold to his very own business class seat on a near-empty Singapore Airlines flight from Melbourne to Italy.

The goodest of good boys: Lewis flew business class alongside his favourite human.
The goodest of good boys: Lewis flew business class alongside his favourite human.

Just don’t get your pet’s hopes up for those Virgin Australia flights: your favourite furry friend won’t be able to sit on your lap or curl up on an empty seat next to you.

Virgin says animals will have to remain in an small ventilated airline-approved pet carrier (Executive Traveller is seeking clarification on if this will count as one of your two carry-on bags).

More crucially, that carrier must then be stowed under the seat in front of the owner for the duration of the flight - which will no doubt prove a tight fit for poodles and pugs, let alone medium-sized dogs.

Small-sized dogs and cats could soon be flying high on Virgin Australia.
Small-sized dogs and cats could soon be flying high on Virgin Australia.

And the ‘pet zone’ will be restricted to a limited number of designated rows on each plane.

“It won’t be a menagerie on board, we’re just talking dogs or cats,” clarified outgoing Virgin Australia Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka, ahead of her departure from the airline in the coming months.

Hrdlicka also noted that the creation of those pet-friendly rows meant for passengers who “don’t want to be anywhere near those rows, it will be easy to be separated, especially if you have an allergy.”

I’d hate to point out the obvious,  but by your own metric you are already imposing your own views on other people.

I say it’s about time that Australia caught up with the rest of the world and allowed passengers to travel with pets. It doesn’t seem to be a big issue in Europe or the US.

(Also “woke” seems to be used as a pejorative here. Isn’t being woke a good thing?) but I digress.

I so enjoy comments without punctuation.  In this case I visualise a pet owner with a “dumb grin” watching his pet pissing in the terminal then the pet owner getting on the aircraft and “farting and barking”. I must confess to farting at times on aircraft … but never barking. Maybe next time.

Isn’t the English language so, SO entertaining without all those annoying commas, apostrophes, quotation marks etc.

People like you have given up and just want to return to "the way things were".   Except for observing good punctuation and correct spelling and word usage! Clearly there are things for you still to learn.

Allowing pets on aircraft will find its own appropriate level.  How about we allow that to happen, and be constructively involved in that process?

Don't give up on this changing world.  It needs everyone's energy and determination to tackle far more challenging issues than this!

Maybe we can solve a twofer problem here... Babies in overhead locker or under seat in front. Then divide the cabin into these pet/baby friendly zones, and put a door to the zone.

Then door can close to this section, to keep the wretched screaming, growling, stinking and general unpleasant zone from other passengers.

Simples.

Yes, this is a flippant post, but to my real point: leisure animals belong in the hold . Service animals (which undergo rigorous training to assist people with disabilities) only in the cabin.

If you cannot holiday without taking your animals, then it is probably time to consider whether you are a responsible pet owner at all...

Dogs and cats on planes?  I love my cat, and I loved my dog when he was with us.  However, I won't be travelling on airlines that permit them in the cabin.  It's hard enough to get passengers to leave their carry-on behind during an evacuation, there's no way anyone is going to leave Tiddles or Fido behind - so we'll have people trying to manhandle 4kg of pet plus 2-3kg of pet carrier down the aisle and down the emergency slide.  Last year we had zero deaths on scheduled commercial air services - but plenty of injuries (mainly relatively minor, thankfully) on evacuations.  Why do it?

Typical dog and cat owners.  Think only of themselves. I don’t hate dogs or cats and am happy to admire from afar, but I’m allergic to them and don’t want to be confined on a plane with them. I have been in a plane in the US and had to be moved due to asthma which was fine as the plane was quite empty but if it wasn’t I can’t imagine how that would have been managed. I doubt I’d descend into full Karen, but being unwell through no fault of your own can bring out the Karen in even the most even keeled of us. Pop the pets in the hold. Oh AFWIW I doubt pets would love being imprisoned in a plastic box for hours. I feel for them.

Have experienced dogs travelling on planes in Europe several times, most of the time it becomes a nuisance has been in the airport terminals with dogs constantly barking and have also witnessed one pretty savage fight. On the plane actually feel sorry for the dogs and no doubt cats that are shoved in little cages and then shoved under the seat in front of the owner, cruel in my book. Have also experienced a long session of barking on one plane with the dog being transferred into the plane hold(?) after complaints from other passengers.

I for one will not be flying Virgin when this rule is introduced, barking annoys the hell out of me and I should not have to put up with it when trying to relax on a flight.

I think Virgin will lose much more customers than it could possibly gain. Also, how do you fit an oxygen mask to a dog or cat? Perhaps they will be collateral damage during an emergency. I guess the pet and cage will have to be left behind during an evacuation, or perhaps virgin consider a dog or cats life is worth the same or more than a man, women, or child.

Looks like Virgin is not really considering safety as their top priority.

At least there will be the option to use either Qantas or Rex and hence esclude any travel on the flying kennel (Virgin).

On a more serious note.

My husband is immunosuppressed and has been told by his specialist that it is imperative to avoid bacterial infection. As dog faeces frequently contains antibiotic 'resistant' bacteria, that would rule Virgin out for us. I agree also with a previous comment about allergies (also real for us as our son is allergic to cat and dog dander) that it would pose quite a dilemma for the airline on full capacity flights, if as a result they had to relocate passengers away from the furry friends.

It seems to me that Virgin hasn't fully considered the implications of such a decision.

06 Feb 2014

Total posts 28

Would you husband intend to bend down and remove the dog poop from the cage itself? I understand the risk, but for a dog/cat in a cage, its pretty minimal unless he was to go out of his way to be in contact. And surely you would be letting the airline know of any requirements in advance anyway?

Years ago, when smoking was allowed on board commercial aircraft, there were designated non-smoking rows and designated smoking-permitted rows.   It seems that VA is aiming for that kind of segregation.  Clearly, there are going to be economy rows designated for pets.  Will there also be "preferred seating" rows ?  Will there be Economy X rows ?  Will there be Business Class rows ?  If not, why not ?  What a can of worms !

Rows segregated into smoking and non-smoking was better than nothing, but non-smokers always dreaded the seat-belt sign going off because it was be followed instantly by a wave a smoke, all the way through the cabin. Presumably the same will happen with barking pets, except they won't respect the "No Barking" signs.
